Because vs. Despite
When facing the long post-injury road to recovery, an athlete will often proudly proclaim that he’s coming back stronger than ever despite the injury.
The use of that subtle and inconspicuous word poses a risk.
Clemson sports psychologist Cory Shaffer noticed this trend among college athletes he counseled, and believed the innocuous word and the framing it implied was actually inadvertently closing them off to valuable perspective and potential opportunity.
He advocated for a change in diction. Swap despite for because.
Interviewing My Grandfather
My grandfather circled the room and asked the question again. Where’s Barb?
He wasn’t agitated, nor worried. He just wanted to know where his wife of nearly seven decades was. Why wasn't she at home?
That exchange happened on a loop. Every half hour restarting his inquiry. Each time I answered, a sense of ease would appear over his face, momentarily mollified. It was nice to see how the news calmed him.
Review: Girls’ Book of Knots
K.D. Harryman’s ‘Girls’ Book of Knots’ was a wonderful read. It's a beautiful and at times haunting poetry collection about growing up as a girl amidst the hardships of rural Kentucky. Told through the perspective of a mother reflecting on the dangers and difficulties of her own upbringing as she now raises two daughters, the collection is a moving portrayal of girlhood and our connections to place.
Biblioteca Vasconcelos
Biblioteca Vasconcelos is a study in contrasts. It’s at once a marvel of design and public infrastructure—the largest library in Mexico at 400,000 square feet, and one of the most stunning architecturally in the world. The lead architect Alberto Kalach designed it to resemble an Ark, “a carrier of human knowledge, immersed in a lush botanic garden.”
Things I’ve learned…
By sitting down and jotting down such a list, if done sincerely, we can open up a window into ourselves for others. I’m intrigued by this and would like to see less of it from people I don’t know and more from those I love and respect. It’s an opportunity to get to know them better.
The Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca
Over 900 distinct flora species native to Oaxaca enclosed within the walls of a 16th century monastery. A region’s history told through plants.
Estadio Azteca: A World Cup Qualifier
Armed guards with body shields half-raised traced the perimeter of the stadium. While the anthems rang out, I ducked into a bathroom, passing through the narrow, rock-laced tunnel where a row of police stood shoulder to shoulder. When I found my seat, I saw that another set assembled on the field forming a barrier between the lush green pitch and the gathering fans.
Next Stop: Mexico City
I get asked often why I moved to Mexico City. There are many reasons, but ultimately it came down to one thing - I felt it.
An innate feeling percolating for longer than I was aware and eluding casual self-analysis.
12 Problems
You have to keep a dozen of your favorite problems constantly present in your mind, although by and large they will lay in a dormant state. Every time you hear or read a new trick or a new result, test it against each of your twelve problems to see whether it helps. Every once in a while there will be a hit, and people will say, “How did he do it? He must be a genius!” - Richard Feynman
The Shitty First Draft
What blocks us often holds the key to what unlocks us. The things that feel most difficult are the ones we most need to grapple with, push through, and fight past because there’s something worthwhile on the other side of that angst and anguish.
